Dots and Dashes: Adventures at the Dawn of the Wireless Age

CQD! Here MKC! Shipwrecked!

In January 1909, three years before the Titanic, a massive rescue at sea electrified the World. The Italian refugees ship Florida had collided with the luxurious White Star liner Republic. More than 1500 lives were at stake. Thus began the first rescue on open sea organized by wireless.

Jack Binns, Marconi wireless operator on the Republic tells the story of rescue and more - including his heretofore unknown roles in the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic.

His granddaughter Virginia Utermohlen Lovelace, provides extensive historical notes and illustrations, coupled with easily understood explanations of the wireless systems of the day.

About

VUBooks - Books with a point of view

Virginia Utermohlen Lovelace developed as her imprint VUBooks, to present her writings on flavor and sensory perception, and her book on the early history of wireless, based on the writings of her grandfather, Jack Binns.

She parleyed her scientific training in two different directions. One is the story of her grandfather, Jack Binns, the Marconi wireless operator who coordinated the first rescue at open sea using wireless, in 1909.

The second direction is the story of sensory perception, and particularly flavor perception. Her highly praised presentations to the World Tea Expo in the past several years led her to write her first book laying out this story, "Three Basic Teas & How to Enjoy Them." Her second book is included in the "Scents of Tea" kits, designed for professionals and amateurs to sharpen their experience of tea. Her third book on tea, "Tea: a Nerd's Eye View," will appear in November, and is available for pre-order here. Be sure to look for "pre-order" under the Variations tab.
